RESUMO

BACKGROUND: As a well-known fact to the public, gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) could bring serious risks for both pregnant women and infants. During this important investigation into the linkage between GDM patients and their altered expression in the serum, proteomics techniques were deployed to detect the differentially expressed proteins (DEPs) of in the serum of GDM patients to further explore its pathogenesis, and find out possible biomarkers to forecast GDM occurrence. AIM: To investigation serum proteins differentially expressed in GDM were assessed using isobaric tag for relative and absolute quantitation (iTRAQ) proteomics and bioinformatics analyses. METHODS: Subjects were divided into GDM and normal control groups according to the IADPSG diagnostic criteria. Serum samples were randomly selected from four cases in each group at 24-28 wk of gestation, and the blood samples were identified by applying iTRAQ technology combined with liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry. Key proteins and signaling pathways associated with GDM were identified by bioinformatics analysis, and the expression of key proteins in serum from 12 wk to 16 wk of gestation was further verified using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). RESULTS: Forty-seven proteins were significantly differentially expressed by analyzing the serum samples between the GDM gravidas as well as the healthy ones. Among them, 31 proteins were found to be upregulated notably and the rest 16 proteins were downregulated remarkably. Bioinformatic data report revealed abnormal expression of proteins associated with lipid metabolism, coagulation cascade activation, complement system and inflammatory response in the GDM group. ELISA results showed that the contents of RBP4, as well as ANGPTL8, increased in the serum of GDM gravidas compared with the healthy ones, and this change was found to initiate from 12 wk to 16 wk of gestation. CONCLUSION: GDM symptoms may involve abnormalities in lipid metabolism, coagulation cascade activation, complement system and inflammatory response. RBP4 and ANGPTL8 are expected to be early predictors of GDM.

RESUMO

This study aimed to investigate the feasibility, indications, and benefits of transvaginal natural orifice transluminal endoscopic surgery (v-NOTES) hysterectomy for nonmalignant gynecological diseases. The clinical data, including the baseline information and surgical conditions of 81 patients who underwent v-NOTES hysterectomy for nonmalignant gynecological diseases in a tertiary university hospital from October 2018 to August 2022, were retrospectively analyzed and compared with the total laparoscopic hysterectomy group (200 cases) and the transumbilical laparoendoscopic Single Site Surgery group (150 cases). In comparison with the other 2 groups, the highest proportion of patients in the v-NOTES group had cervical intraepithelial neoplasia. Accordingly, mean preoperative uterine volume measured by sonography was significantly smaller in the v-notes group. In the v-NOTES group, the mean number of vaginal deliveries and age were significantly higher, while the mean number of previous abdominal surgeries was lower compared to the other 2 groups. The V-NOTES group had a shorter operation time, shorter postoperative urinary catheter insertion time, earlier intestinal recovery days, shorter hospital stay, and lower visual analogue scale scores after surgery, and the differences were statistically significant. When indicated appropriately, v-NOTES hysterectomy can be a feasible and advantageous surgical modality. In particular, in comparison to the laparoendoscopic Single Site Surgery and total laparoscopic hysterectomy groups, the v-NOTES group had advantages in postoperative recovery and had more aesthetic surgical results.

RESUMO

Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) has caused an ongoing global pandemic of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). Proper nutritional support helps boost the immunity of the human body, strengthen the high-risk populations' defense against SARS-CoV-2, reduce the prevalence of COVID-19, prevent mild cases from developing into severe cases, and reduce the occurrence of adverse symptoms during recovery. Nutritional support is an important guarantee to provide protection against virus infection, promote patient recovery, and improve patient prognosis. Whole nutritional food formulas designed according to the characteristic clinical symptoms of COVID-19 provide patients with comprehensive nutritional support of appropriate nutritional content, which effectively improves the nutritional status of patients and provides strong technical support to improve their quality of survival. During the critical period of COVID-19 prevention and control, more emphasis should be placed on the essential role of nutritional support and the clinical efficacy of nutritional support should be given full play.

RESUMO

Introduction: Drug-related problems (DRPs) refer to events or circumstances involving drug therapy that actually or potentially interfere with desired health outcomes. DRPs might be severe for children with chronic diseases managed at primary health care institutions, but the relevant research is scarce. Objective: In this cross-sectional study, we aimed to explore the prevalence, types, causes, and influencing factors of DRPs in children with chronic diseases in a Chinese primary health care institution. Methods: We recruited children with chronic diseases who visited the pediatric outpatient department in a primary health care institution from July 1 to 12 October 2021. Clinical pharmacists identified DRPs through medication therapy reviews, classified the types and causes of DRPs, and distinguished the manifested DRPs that affected the outcome and potential DRPs that were going to affect the outcome. Results: A total of 188 children with chronic diseases was included, and 584 DRPs were identified in 89.89% of participants. The most common type of DRPs was "treatment effectiveness" (a manifested problem or potential problem with the effect of the pharmacotherapy; 83.56%), of which 67.29% were potential DRPs. The second common type was "treatment safety" (patient suffers or could suffer from an adverse drug event; 14.21%), of which 89.16% were potential DRPs. The most common cause of DRPs was related to the process of use (42.24%), such as "patient uses/takes less drug than prescribed or does not take the drug at all," "patient stores drug inappropriately," and "patient administers/uses the drug in a wrong way." The second common cause was related to the process of dispensing (29.83%), such as "necessary information not provided or incorrect advice provided" and "prescribed drug is not available." The third common cause was related to the process of prescribing (26.21%), such as "drug dose is too low" and "no or incomplete drug treatment despite an existing indication." The number of combined medications was an influencing factor for the frequency of DRPs (p < 0.05). Conclusion: This cross-sectional study showed that the current situation regarding DRPs among children with chronic diseases managed in the primary health care institution was serious. The types of DRPs were mainly related to treatment effectiveness, and improper usage of medications was one of the main causes of DRPs. The number of combined drugs was the influencing factor for the frequency of DRPs. In the future, pharmacists should consider formulating pharmaceutical intervention strategies for this specific group according to the characteristics of DRPs.

RESUMO

Inflammatory activation and oxidative stress promote the proliferation of vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMCs), which accounts for pathological vascular remodeling in hypertension. ELABELA (ELA) is the second endogenous ligand for angiotensin receptor-like 1 (APJ) receptor that has been discovered thus far. In this study, we investigated whether ELA regulated VSMC proliferation and vascular remodeling in spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHRs). We showed that compared to that in Wistar-Kyoto rats (WKYs), ELA expression was markedly decreased in the VSMCs of SHRs. Exogenous ELA-21 significantly inhibited inflammatory cytokines and NADPH oxidase 1 expression, reactive oxygen species production and VSMC proliferation and increased the nuclear translocation of nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor (Nrf2) in VSMCs. Osmotic minipump infusion of exogenous ELA-21 in SHRs for 4 weeks significantly decreased diastolic blood pressure, alleviated vascular remodeling and ameliorated vascular inflammation and oxidative stress in SHRs. In VSMCs of WKY, angiotensin II (Ang II)-induced inflammatory activation, oxidative stress and VSMC proliferation were attenuated by pretreatment with exogenous ELA-21 but were exacerbated by ELA knockdown. Moreover, ELA-21 inhibited the expression of matrix metalloproteinase 2 and 9 in both SHR-VSMCs and Ang II-treated WKY-VSMCs. We further revealed that exogenous ELA-21-induced inhibition of proliferation and PI3K/Akt signaling were amplified by the PI3K/Akt inhibitor LY294002, while the APJ receptor antagonist F13A abolished ELA-21-induced PI3K/Akt inhibition and Nrf2 activation in VSMCs. In conclusion, we demonstrate that ELA-21 alleviates vascular remodeling through anti-inflammatory, anti-oxidative and anti-proliferative effects in SHRs, indicating that ELA-21 may be a therapeutic agent for treating hypertension.

RESUMO

Many rice microRNAs have been identified as fine-tuning factors in the regulation of agronomic traits and immunity. Among them, Osa-miR535 targets SQUAMOSA promoter binding protein-like 14 (OsSPL14) to positively regulate tillers but negatively regulate yield and immunity. Here, we uncovered that Osa-miR535 targets another SPL gene, OsSPL4, to suppress rice immunity against Magnaporthe oryzae. Overexpression of Osa-miR535 significantly decreased the accumulation of the fusion protein SPL4TBS -YFP that contains the target site of Osa-miR535 in OsSPL4. Consistently, Osa-miR535 mediated the cleavage of OsSPL4 mRNA between the 10th and 11th base pair of the predicted binding site at the 3' untranslated region. Transgenic rice lines overexpressing OsSPL4 (OXSPL4) displayed enhanced blast disease resistance accompanied by enhanced immune responses, including increased expression of defense-relative genes and up-accumulated H2 O2 . By contrast, the knockout mutant osspl4 exhibited susceptibility. Moreover, OsSPL4 binds to the promoter of GH3.2, an indole-3-acetic acid-amido synthetase, and promotes its expression. Together, these data indicate that Os-miR535 targets OsSPL4 and OsSPL4-GH3.2, which may parallel the OsSPL14-WRKY45 module in rice blast disease resistance.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Cervical cancer is a gynecological malignancy common in middle-aged and older patients, with a high mortality rate. Spondin-2 is an extracellular matrix protein that involved in innate and acquired immune responses. Herein, we investigated the relationship between serum Spondin-2 expression, tumor invasion and infiltration, and immune response in patients with cervical cancer and provided a theoretical basis for clinical practice. AIM: To investigate the relationship between serum Spondin-2 expression and cervical cancer-related indicators. METHODS: Overall, 147 patients with cervical cancer who were admitted to our institution between January 2019 and August 2019 were assigned to the cervical cancer group, and 92 patients with benign uterine lesions and 86 healthy individuals were assigned to the benign and control groups, respectively. In each group, serum Spondin-2 expression was measured, and the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve was determined. Patients with cervical cancer were classified into high or low Spondin-2 groups depending on the Spondin-2 threshold value used for diagnosing cervical cancer. Patient's clinical data were collected to compare the clinicopathologic characteristics, immune cytokine levels, and prognosis of patients with varying Spondin-2 expression levels. RESULTS: The expression level of serum Spondin-2 was significantly higher in the cervical cancer group than in the benign and control groups (P < 0.05). According to the ROC curve, the cutoff value of Spondin-2 used in the diagnosis of cervical carcinoma was 25.68 ± 7.11 µg/L. The proportion of patients with Federation of Gynecology and Obstetrics stage III, nerve invasion, vascular invasion, and lymph node metastasis was higher in the high Spondin-2 group than in the low Spondin-2 group (P < 0.05). Interleukin-5 (IL-5) and IL-4 Levels were higher in the high Spondin-2 group than in the low Spondin-2 group. In contrast, IL-2 and tumor necrosis factor-α levels were lower in the high Spondin-2 group than in the low Spondin-2 group (P < 0.05). After 3 years of follow-up, progression-free survival and overall survival were significantly shorter in the high Spondin-2 group than in the low Spondin-2 group (P < 0.05). CONCLUSION: The expression of serum Spondin-2 is upregulated in patients with cervical carcinoma and is related to tumor invasion and infiltration, antitumor immune response, and prognosis.

RESUMO

microRNAs act as fine-tuners in the regulation of plant growth and resistance against biotic and abiotic stress. Here we demonstrate that rice miR1432 fine-tunes yield and blast disease resistance via different modules. Overexpression of miR1432 leads to compromised resistance and decreased yield, whereas blocking miR1432 using a target mimic of miR1432 results in enhanced resistance and yield. miR1432 suppresses the expression of LOC_Os03g59790, which encodes an EF-hand family protein 1 (OsEFH1). Overexpression of OsEFH1 leads to enhanced rice resistance but decreased grain yield. Further study revealed that miR1432 and OsEFH1 are differentially responsive to chitin, a fungus-derived pathogen/microbe-associated molecular pattern (PAMP/MAMP). Consistently, blocking miR1432 or overexpression of OsEFH1 improves chitin-triggered immunity responses. In contrast, overexpression of ACOT, another target gene regulating rice yield traits, has no significant effects on rice blast disease resistance. Altogether, these results indicate that miR1432 balances yield and resistance via different target genes, and blocking miR1432 can simultaneously improve yield and resistance.

RESUMO

Introduction: Drug-related problems (DRPs) are not only detrimental to patients' physical health and quality of life but also lead to a serious waste of health care resources. The condition of DRPs might be more severe for patients in primary health care institutions. Objective: This systematic review aims to comprehensively review the characteristics of DRPs for patients in primary health care institutions, which might help find effective strategies to identify, prevent, and intervene with DRPs in the future. Methods: We searched three English databases (Embase, The Cochrane Library, and PubMed) and four Chinese databases (CNKI, CBM, VIP, and Wanfang). Two of the researchers independently conducted literature screening, quality evaluation, and data extraction. Qualitative and quantitative methods were combined to analyze the data. Results: From the 3,368 articles screened, 27 met the inclusion criteria and were included in this review. The median (inter-quartile range, IQR) of the incidences of DRPs was 70.04% (59%), and the median (IQR) of the average number of DRPs per patient was 3.4 (2.8). The most common type of DRPs was "treatment safety." The causes of DRPs were mainly in the prescribing section, including "drug selection" and "dose selection", while patients' poor adherence in the use section was also an important cause of DRPs. Risk factors such as the number of medicines, age, and disease condition were positively associated with the occurrence of DRPs. In addition, the medians (IQR) of the rate of accepted interventions, implemented interventions, and solved DRPs were 78.8% (22.3%), 64.15% (16.85%), and 76.99% (26.09%), respectively. Conclusion: This systematic review showed that the condition of DRPs in primary health care institutions was serious. In pharmaceutical practice, the patients with risk factors of DRPs should be monitored more closely. Pharmacists could play important roles in the identification and intervention of DRPs, and more effective intervention strategies need to be established in the future.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To the clinical characteristics and prognostic value of the patients with complete deletion of TET_JBP domain (ΔJBP) in TET2 acute myeloid leukemia (AML). METHODS: Next Generation Sequencing technology was used to determine the mutations of 34 AML-related genes (including TET2 gene). The I-TASSER tool was used to predict the tertiary structure of the full-length TET2 protein and TET_JBP structure deletion. RESULTS: Among 38 AML patients with TET2 mutations, 22(57.9%) showed truncation mutations, of which 16 (72.7%) produced TET2ΔJBP truncation mutants. Protein structure prediction showed that the deletion of TET_JBP domain lead to the significant changes of tertiary structure in TET2 protein. Compared with the patients in non-ΔJBP group, the age of patients in ΔJBP group were older (63 vs 54 years old, P=0.047), and the occurrence rate of CEBPA double mutation (CEBPAdm) were more frequency (31.3% vs 0, P=0.009), the complete remission (CR) rate after induction chemotherapy(37.5% vs 81.8%, P=0.008) were lower, the median EFS (5 vs 19 months, P=0.000) and median OS (16 vs 22 months, P=0.041) were shorter. Univariate analysis showed that platelets <50×109/L (P=0.004) and CEBPAdm (P=0.001) were related to the shorter OS of the patients. Further COX multivariate analysis showed that CEBPAdm is an independent prognostic factors of OS in TET2ΔJBP patients (P=0.010). In addition, ΔJBP patients with CEBPAdm showed lower hemoglobin levels (62 vs 75g/L, P=0.030) and lower median OS (9 months vs 18 months, P=0.000) than the patients without CEBPAdm. CONCLUSION: AML patients with TET2ΔJBP truncation mutant shows lower CR rate, shorter EFS and OS after induction chemotherapy, which may be related to the poor prognosis, and co-mutation with CEBPAdm, which is the independent prognostic factors of OS in AML patients with TET2ΔJBP.

RESUMO

ABSTRACT: We sought to analyze the current situation of personnel training and scientific research regarding pharmacy intravenous admixture services (PIVAS), to provide evidence-based medical knowledge to inform personnel training for PIVAS in mainland China.A cross-sectional survey was used to examine the current status of PIVAS personnel training, research capabilities, needs, and research output of PIVAS personnel based from the perspective of leaders in PIVAS in China. The survey period was from March to April 2019.A total of 137 hospitals in China participated in this survey. The main training content areas of PIVAS staff in each hospital were professional theoretical knowledge (100.00%, 137/137) and practical operation ability (98.54%, 135/137). The frequency of training was typically 1 to 2 times/month (56.9%, 78/137). The average duration of a single training session was typically 1 h or less (68.6%, 94/137). The most common forms of PIVAS training were lectures (94.89%, 130/137) and practical operations (79.56%, 109/137). A total of 51.8% (71/137) of PIVAS leaders believed that PIVAS personnel had a high degree of scientific research needs, but 61.3% (84/137) believed that few personnel had mastered scientific research methodology, and 41.6% (57/137) believed that the scientific research ability of personnel was relatively poor. Among PIVAS personnel, only 38.7% (53/137) had specialized scientific training. The annual total SCI output was 0 to 18 articles (median 0 articles) and the total number of national-level funding grants was 0 to 2 (median 0). There were no significant differences in the training of PIVAS personnel and scientific research between different provinces and hospital levels. The training content of PIVAS personnel in China was found to be relatively rich, but management tools, career development, and training in scientific research were found to be relatively weak, and the scientific research output was very low. It is necessary to build a comprehensive training system for career development among PIVAS personnel.

RESUMO

MicroRNA168 (miR168) is a key miRNA that targets Argonaute1 (AGO1), a major component of the RNA-induced silencing complex1,2. Previously, we reported that miR168 expression was responsive to infection by Magnaporthe oryzae, the causal agent of rice blast disease3. However, how miR168 regulates immunity to rice blast and whether it affects rice development remains unclear. Here, we report our discovery that the suppression of miR168 by a target mimic (MIM168) not only improves grain yield and shortens flowering time in rice but also enhances immunity to M. oryzae. These results were validated through repeated tests in rice fields in the absence and presence of rice blast pressure. We found that the miR168-AGO1 module regulates miR535 to improve yield by increasing panicle number, miR164 to reduce flowering time, and miR1320 and miR164 to enhance immunity. Our discovery demonstrates that changes in a single miRNA enhance the expression of multiple agronomically important traits.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: Riboflavin deficiency causes ariboflavinosis, a common nutritional deficiency disease. The purpose of this study is to investigate the effects of riboflavin deficiency on the important internal organs and its potential mechanisms. METHODS: Experiment 1, male F344 rats were randomly assigned to R6 (normal riboflavin, 6 mg/kg) and R0 (riboflavin-deficient, 0 mg/kg) groups. Experiment 2 rats were assigned to R6, R0.6 (0.6 mg/kg) and R0.06 (0.06 mg/kg) groups. Experiment 3 rats were assigned to R6 and R0 → R6 (riboflavin replenishment) groups. Bacterial communities were analyzed based on 16S rRNA gene sequencing. RESULTS: Riboflavin deficiency induced ariboflavinosis (R0.06 46.7%; R0 72%) and esophageal epithelial atrophy (R0.06 40%; R0 44%) in rats, while the R6 group did not display symptoms (P < 0.001, respectively). Esophageal epithelial atrophy occurred simultaneously (R0.06 66.7%; R0 63.6%) with ariboflavinosis or appeared alone (R0.06 33.3%; R0 36.4%). Esophagus is the most vulnerable internal organ. Riboflavin deficiency followed by replenishment (R0 → R6) was effective in treating ariboflavinosis (83.3% vs. 0%, P < 0.001) and esophageal epithelial atrophy (66.7% vs. 20%, P = 0.17). Riboflavin deficiency modulated gut microbiota composition. The several key genera (Romboutsia, Turicibacter and Clostridium sensu stricto 1) were strongly correlated with ariboflavinosis and esophageal epithelial atrophy (P < 0.01 or P < 0.05). The potential mechanism is that gut microbiota affects body's xenobiotic biodegradation and metabolism, and genomic instability. CONCLUSIONS: Riboflavin deficiency induces ariboflavinosis and esophageal epithelial atrophy by modulating the gut microbiota, and offers new Queryinsight into riboflavin deficiency and esophageal lesions.

RESUMO

The Arabidopsis RESISTANCE TO POWDERY MILDEW 8.1 (RPW8.1) activates confined cell death and defense against different pathogens. However, the underlying regulatory mechanisms still remain elusive. Here, we show that RPW8.1 activates ethylene signaling that, in turn, negatively regulates RPW8.1 expression. RPW8.1 binds and stabilizes 1-aminocyclopropane-1-carboxylate oxidase 4 (ACO4), which may in part explain increased ethylene production and signaling in RPW8.1-expressing plants. In return, ACO4 and other key components of ethylene signaling negatively regulate RPW8.1-mediated cell death and disease resistance via suppressing RPW8.1 expression. Loss of function in ACO4, EIN2, EIN3 EIL1, ERF6, ERF016 or ORA59 increases RPW8.1-mediated cell death and defense response. By contrast, overexpression of EIN3 abolishes or significantly compromises RPW8.1-mediated cell death and disease resistance. Furthermore, ERF6, ERF016 and ORA59 appear to act as trans-repressors of RPW8.1, with OAR59 being able to directly bind to the RPW8.1 promoter. Taken together, our results have revealed a feedback regulatory circuit connecting RPW8.1 and the ethylene-signaling pathway, in which RPW8.1 enhances ethylene signaling, and the latter, in return, negatively regulates RPW8.1-mediated cell death and defense response via suppressing RPW8.1 expression to attenuate its defense activity.

RESUMO

SCOPE: Epidemiologic evidence suggests that riboflavin (RBF) deficiency is a specific nutritional predisposition for esophageal cancer. The aim of this study is to investigate the potential roles of gut microbiota in esophageal tumorigenesis caused by the RBF deficiency. METHODS: Male F344 rats were subcutaneously injected with the chemical carcinogen N-nitrosomethylbenzylamine (NMBA, 0.35 mg kg-1). Rats were assigned to 4 groups, denoted as R6 (normal RBF, 6 mg kg-1), R6N (normal RBF combined with NMBA), R6N → R0N (normal RBF conversion to RBF-deficiency), and R0N → R6N (RBF-deficiency conversion to normal RBF). Bacterial communities were analyzed based on high-throughput 16S rRNA gene sequencing. Oxidative DNA damage and double-strand break markers were studied by immunohistochemistry. RESULTS: The R6N → R0N diet enhanced the incidence of esophageal intraepithelial neoplasia (EIN, 40 weeks 66.7% vs. 25 weeks 16.7%, P < 0.05). RBF deficiency and replenishment modulated the gut microbiota composition. The gut microbiota (e.g. Caulobacteraceae, Sphingomonas and Bradyrhizobium) affected xenobiotic biodegradation and the genomic instability of the host. Furthermore, the RBF deficiency aggravated oxidative DNA damage and DNA double-strand breaks (immunohistochemistry) in the esophageal epithelium, whereas the RBF replenishment had the opposite effect (P < 0.05, respectively). CONCLUSIONS: RBF deficiency promotes NMBA-induced esophageal tumorigenesis, which is associated with gut microbiota-associated genomic instability, and offers new insights into the role of RBF deficiency in esophageal carcinogenesis.

RESUMO

Experimental studies have demonstrated statin-induced toxicity for ovary and uterus. However, the safety of statins on the functions of ovary and uterus in real-world clinical settings remains unknown. The aim of this study was to identify ovary and uterus related adverse events (AEs) associated with statin use by analyzing data from FDA Adverse Event Reporting System (FAERS). We used OpenVigil 2.1 to query FAERS database. Ovary and uterus related AEs were defined by 383 Preferred Terms, which could be classified into ten aspects. Disproportionality analysis was performed to assess the association between AEs and statin use. Our results suggest that statin use may be associated with a series of ovary and uterus related AEs. These AEs are involved in ovarian cysts and neoplasms, uterine neoplasms, cervix neoplasms, uterine disorders (excl neoplasms), cervix disorders (excl neoplasms), endocrine disorders of gonadal function, menstrual cycle and uterine bleeding disorders, menopause related conditions, and sexual function disorders. Moreover, there are variabilities in the types and signal strengths of ovary and uterus related AEs across individual statins. According to our findings, the potential ovary and uterus related AEs of statins should attract enough attention and be closely monitored in future clinical practice.

RESUMO

This study investigated the prevalence of depression among children with epilepsy and evaluated factors associated with depression.Participants who met the selection criteria were included in this cross-sectional study, which was conducted at the Pediatric Neurology Department of the West China Women's and Children's Hospital from January to May 2018. Depression status among children with epilepsy was evaluated by the Depression Self-Rating Scale for Children (DSRSC). Information on sociodemographic characteristics, co-morbid diseases and family conditions were collected as independent variables. Variables found in univariate analysis to affect depression were used in a multiple linear regression model on factors related to depression among children with epilepsy.A total of 124 patients participated in the study, with a response rate of 93.9% (124/132). In this sample, 60.5% (75/124) of patients were male and the mean age of patients was 11.17 ±â€Š2.29 years. The mean score on the DSRSC was 9.65 ±â€Š6.45 and 16.9% (21/124) of children with epilepsy were considered to have depression. According to the multiple linear regression analysis, the DSRSC scores showed a significant correlation with comorbidities (B = 0.178; standard error (SE) = 1.123; P = .043), attitude towards seizures (B = -0.180; SE = 1.171; P = .039) and adverse reaction to medications (B = 0.233; SE = 1.797; P = .008).There is relatively high prevalence of depression in children with epilepsy in western China. More health education is needed to reduce the rate of depression in children with epilepsy, particularly for those patients with comorbidities, negative attitudes towards seizures and adverse reactions to medications.
